Pasteli

This healthy treat is easy to make and perfect for honey-lovers. It also makes a great midday snack for when you need to refuel.

When I was little, my mom used to buy this treat for me when we would go to the market together to keep me happy while she shopped. I was reminded of it recently while watching the show Street Food Around the World on Netflix and decided to try and make some. I never realized how simple, easy, and healthy it was. It’s just two ingredients, both of which are considered super foods. It’s great as a midday snack when you need an energy boost to refuel, and it’s sweet enough to use as a healthy dessert.

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup honey
  • 1 1/2 cups sesame seeds
  • Lemon zest (optional)

Method

Bring honey to a boil on the stove. As soon as it bubbles, add sesame seeds. Mix well. Let it come to a second boil, then turn it off.

Place parchment paper in a 9″x5″x2″ bread loaf baking pan. Pour the pasteli into the pan and even out with a spatula. Cover with another piece of parchment paper and flatten some more.

Place pasteli in the refrigerator for a couple hours to cool down and firm up. Once cooled, keep it in the parchment paper and cut with kitchen shears into whatever serving size you want (but keep in mind that they are filling).
